5 Things NOT to Do When Staging Your Home

Staging a home is the most misunderstood process in home selling. Creating the right atmosphere draws buyers in and helps them imagine themselves in your space. Too often, though, the staging process is overlooked. When creating the right scene for buyers, avoid these common mistakes.

  1. Neglecting the deep clean — A clean and fresh home is the very first step. If the home smells like last night's dinner and there's cat hair in the corners - it's not going to sell! Focus on detailed cleaning in areas that are often overlooked such as baseboards, fan blades, and air vents. A little bit of elbow grease can take your home from ok to oh wow!
  2. Leaving the clutter — You may still be living in the home but a house that is packed from floor to ceiling doesn't allow buyers to see a home's potential. Too much stuff is distracting. Pack away as much you can. This is also a great opportunity to get rid of things you don't want to take with you during your own move.
  3.  Keeping personal items in view — It can be difficult for a buyer to imagine living in your home when it is covered in personal photos and keepsakes. Your goal as the seller is to create a blank canvas. Go ahead and pack away personal items.
  4. Overly bright colors and accents - Your taste is not the same as everybody else's and that's ok. But selling your home means appealing to the largest audience possible. Neutral accents are less distracting and allow the buyer to imagine what THEIR stuff will look like in the home.
  5. Over-accessorizing — You've packed away personal items and replaced them with neutral accessories. Great job! But too much a good thing is a bad thing. Too many candles, throw pillows, and furniture can make a room feel busy and cluttered.

Buyers are drawn to a space that they can see themselves in. When they look at a room, they should be able to easily imagine their things in the space. Keep it simple and keep it clean when staging. If you need help making your home shine, consider investing in the help of a professional.
